Weight Loss
If you look around you, you will hear a lot of people talk about dieting and losing weight. Every other week there is a new diet out that will work better than the previous ones.
Being thin is in. Well according to the media anyway. Even the thin actresses are sometimes labeled ‘fat’ or ‘big’ while to me (and probably a lot of people) they look perfectly fine. What you get is healthy and good looking young ‘stars’ such as Lindsay Lohan or Nicole Richie who loose weight while they don’t need to. Surely they claim they do it for a role in a movie or any other excuse you can think of but why do they not change back to their normal selves after the part is over?
That’s easy to answer, because they get complimented over and over again on how great they look now they’ve lost weight. Like everybody else they do like compliments on their looks and if you get complimented on being thinner you’re not going back to your old ‘fat’ (which in their case isn’t even true!) self.
What happens next can be best described as a chain reaction; young Hollywood stars lose weight, look stick thin (most of the times even ugly and scarily thin), get complimented on it and appear in every magazine. That sends out a message to young girls and women around the world; If you’re thin you’re pretty and you will get complimented and rewarded.
The next thing you know young girls and women alike start losing weight to fit into the category of ‘perfect women’. If losing weight was done in a healthy and safe way it wouldn’t be such a problem but losing weight mostly consists of skipping meals, irresponsible diets that don’t look at the needs of a human body, not eating enough calories and sometimes even severe eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia (although I don’t believe the media and today’s ‘trend’ are completely to blame for those eating disorders. It can start by wanting to be thin but it ends up being a psychological circle where you can’t get out of without professional help)
I think if you want to be loved by others, you first need to love yourself. Embrace yourself for who you are and believe in yourself. If you want to lose that few extra pounds do it only for yourself not for others. When someone can’t love you for who you are they are not worth having in your life.
With this said I do think that if your health is in serious danger by being extremely overweight or underweight you should get professional help in losing or gaining weight. Loving yourself is one thing; but loving yourself at the expense of your health is another extreme.
Losing weight can / should be done by eating regularly and healthy (so no skipping meals) and exercising enough. If you eat healthy food three times a day instead of junk food and skipping meals it will be easier (and healthier) to lose weight.
Side note; this is not a guide on how to lose weight, this is just my view on today’s media and how they effect the health of (young) women around the world. If you want to lose weight and don’t know where to start seek professional help.
