Mexican Gulf Oil Spill

On April 20, 2010 there was an explosion on an oil platform. This explosion is better known as the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion. Unfortunately this explosion killed 11 workers and injured 17 others. And my thoughts and prayers go out to those injured in the blast and to the families of those who died during the explosion.

This catastrophic explosion also caused a sea floor oil gusher that is now said to be the largest offshore oil spill in the U.S. history. If that wasn’t bad enough the leak is still gushing even while I write this! It’s so tragic to hear and see what this oil spill is doing to the environment. Looking at the photos online of animals covered in oil makes me want to cry.

At the same time it angers me that the media aren’t paying much attention to all of this. It’s been days if not weeks until I last heard a serious report on this tragedy on the news. It seems to me that “we” don’t care much about this whole thing. When something tragic happens concerning humans, country after country lines up to help, media coverage is everywhere, even to a point where you can’t switch a channel without seeing the same horrible things that happened somewhere on this planet. You won’t ever hear me say that’s a bad thing! But what does bother me about this is that nothing of this kind has happened now, while this is a catastrophe in it’s own right.
With that said, some countries have already offered help, but help has been denied as “there is no need right now the U.S. can’t meet” well the damn thing is still gushing isn’t it?!?!

I wonder where the media coverage is, where is the rest of the world population now when it comes to something that “only”  concerns the environment. Apart from the telethon that was held as recently as June 21 it seems like no action is being taken by those who generally are in the front lines when it comes to telethons and helping etc. There are a few exceptions though, there luckily are people who care and who are trying to draw attention to it. One of those people is Ian Somerhalder , if it wasn’t for his tweets (and those of DeepwaterHorizonJIC ) and my Google searches I wouldn’t have a clue as to what is going on, and what is being done about it.

It is just really unbelievable to me that there isn’t more media coverage, more education and more information about what can be done about it! You might wonder why I would care so passionately about something that happened on the other side of the world (to me anyway). It’s not just something that concerns the people, animals and environment over there but it concerns all of us. No matter where you are on the planet. If we all sit back and take our hands of it, thinking that it doesn’t matter to us because it’s not close enough, nothing will ever get done or change. Our planet is going downhill fast enough without oil spill disasters like this and we really should care about preserving our planet a little more careful (for future generations for one).

Loyal visitors to my site probably already know this but let me get this clear for first time visitors. I’m a passionate environmentalist, I care deeply and passionately for the environment and nature (including animals). I separate my trash and recycle as much as I can, I donate monthly and have done so for many years to the WWF because I truly believe wildlife needs our help and protection. Do I want a pat on the back for this because I’m saying it on my blog? The answer is short and simple NO! I’m doing it because I want to do it as it is important to me, not because I want other people to say it’s a great thing! I’m saying it on my blog because I want others to be aware how important all of this is. There is so much you can do without having to spend money to help preserve the environment. Recycling isn’t difficult and anyone can do it!

Some people have already asked me what I have done to help in this oil spill. First of all I have spread the word about it, made people aware about it, told them it’s still gushing. Most of them were surprised about that as they totally weren’t aware it was still leaking! And that of course is due to the lack of media coverage. Social media are a great way to get the word out about these things and hopefully it will reach those people that can physically do anything in the area of the oil spill. I have also donated hair to those trying to clean up the oil spill. A chain of hair dressers in my country is collecting human hair to send to the oil spill site. Human hair is said to absorb the oil, actually getting it out of the water.

I’m also looking into donating some money to organisations that will spend it on cleaning up the oil spill and helping either the people in the area, or the animals. So if you have any suggestions on what organisations could use the financial help the most, feel free to let me know! Again I don’t want a pat on the back, I think everyone should be doing something to contribute to help.

Call me a tree hugger, or ignorant or just plain crazy for caring so much about this. But I feel it’s important enough to talk about and help with and that is all that matters :) .

If you got to the end of this essay like rant about the oil spill, thank you so much for taking the time to read this! Now go out and spread the word, help in any way you can, it really matters! And to those of who already have been doing all of that, thank you so much for caring!

Hey,
It’s a good thing you said about the hair dressers…. which chain is it?

Brainwash chain. I can’t find the news article about it anymore though and (once again) nothing is mentioned about it anywhere else. I hope they still do it (and really sent my hair!!!) but you can always ask in their shops.

Great post. So many people just pretend this whole thing isn’t happening and hope that by ignoring it the whole thing will go away. What everyone needs to do is what you’re doing – be knowledgeable about the whole thing and spread the word and actually try and do something about it. If we all got together to try and do something then we really all could make a difference.

Glad somebody decided to talk about it. It’s so sad about what’s happening. The lives lost, the jobs lost, the devastation to the ocean. Maybe we’ll be better prepared if it happens again, cause it seems like someone dropped the ball this time.

I agree with you. This whole thing is so upsetting. I can’t believe it’s taking this long to take care of. These kinds of precautions should be in place already – it shouldn’t come down to oil gushing for 3 months for it to be taken care of.
