Good Service

Good service in stores is important, not only to me but I guess to most of you out there as well. Sometimes good service is hard to find though (and I’ve written about it many times already). The supermarket I usually go to is an example (to me anyway) of a place where good service is sometimes hard to find. I won’t see that all employees are bad and not willing to help out but the most of the employees I ran into while needing help with something just didn’t care.

For example, I wanted to buy ice cream a while back and noticed that the due date on the pack was somewhere in 2008. I didn’t want to put it back because I didn’t want another customer to accidentally take it home after I put it back. So I looked for a store clerk and explained the situation, as well as wanting to hand him the pack of ice-cream. Unfortunately this employee (like most of his colleagues, minus a few good ones) looked at me, shook his had and told me ‘You can still eat it’. First I couldn’t believe what he just said and didn’t understand why he didn’t just take it from me to throw away. But I recovered quickly from the first shock only to reply ‘You should take it then so it won’t go to waste’ and turned around and walked away. I could still hear him mutter under his breath but I didn’t care. I have to admit I was furious by his response and had hoped for him to say that he’d take it away because it’s unheard of to have 2008 ice for sale in a store while we’re in 2009 already.

Like I said this isn’t the first time this has happened there and it has taught me to check their products all the time. No matter what I buy. I have to admit too that sometimes I forget and do end up with something past it’s due date. When I go back to the store they always give me new ones or my money back so that’s well taken care off. It’s just the responds of the employees when you point them to unhealthy food in their store.

You might wonder where this leads too, well, to a store with good service when it comes to these kind of things! If you have been following me on twitter lately you know that I have been going for organic food where possible. The grocery store I just mentioned doesn’t really sell the organic brand, therefore I had to go to another one. When I got home again, all happy with my new organic purchases I noticed that the rice I bought was past it’s due date. I have to say I didn’t think of checking the rice for a date, although I should have just for the sake of it.

I went back to this particular store hoping for a better response than my past experiences but didn’t want to hold my breath. To my surprise their response was AMAZING. They told me that -of course- I could get a new pack, and while I was checking the new one for a due date, two employees came up to me. They wanted to know about the other packs, but unfortunately they were all well bad (also 2008!). They were on the top shelf and one of them climbed the racks to get up there to get them all out.

I was seriously amazed by this, after all this isn’t what I’m used too. Generally it was just shrugged off. They apologized for the inconvenience and took all the wrong packages with them to the back saying I could get my money back. The lady at the cash register noticed me standing in the queue waiting for a refund. She wanted to call for someone but I told her that the packs had gone already thinking that was the reason she called out. She didn’t call for the products to be removed, no she called someone out to take me out of this (rather long) queue to take me to a closed register to get a refund! How’s that for service?!

So what this rambling comes down to is two thumbs up for the Jan Linders store in my home-town. They offered me great service and I’ll gladly go back there this coming week to check their new stock of organic rice!

Holy crap I can’t believe someone in their right mind would think it was okay to eat. I would have told him to get a spoon and prove it. That’s awful. I’m glad you had a good experience elsewhere.

I too am surprised by this. It sounds a poor neglect of duties that are standard in stores. I’m also surprised that you’re surprised by the good service elsewhere because it shows just how bad the store must have been that you got so used to coming across out of date food.

i have some friends who think nothing of due dates! yes, don’t don’t mind eating food over its due date, and would even offer me that food – i just don’t get it but it’s true!
personally, i do not eat anything past 2 days over its due date, and understand you perfectly.
i think that even if the clerk didn’t mind eating a rotten ice cream, he still should do the right thing as an employee and remove them from the exposer…
