Back To Haunt Me
I never really thought one of my posts would come back to haunt me. Sort of anyway…
On April 24, 2009 (yes only a few days ago) I posted about Test Animal Day, and how that was a little more important than Hairball Awareness Day. I shouldn’t have done that, I should have taken Hairball Awareness Day very serious
This morning I woke up only to find a very gross looking spot on the sofa. Moving a little closer I noticed it was stomach acid and hair. Yes, a hairball…. So there in the middle of my white sofa was a dried in hairball Sam left behind for me. Which is unexpected as Sam never had a hairball before, but he’s loosing a lot of hair at the moment so it’s not strange that he has one now.
Luckily I have a very easy sofa, you can take the covers off and put them in the washer (and the dryer!) so I’m currently sitting on a very clean, fresh smelling sofa.
Of course I’m not blaming Sam, hairballs happen when you have a cat. I can’t get angry at him for either puking on my sofa (or carpet or bed or whatever) or leaving a hairball behind on the mentioned locations (or anywhere else for that matter). It just teaches me not to mock any celebration day that sounds a little silly, because it will come back to haunt me.
So in honour of Hairball Awareness Day, here are a few facts (by Wikipedia) about hairballs:
- Cats get hairballs because they groom themselves by licking and thereby ingesting it. They vomit it up when it gets too big.
- Rabbits have hairballs too as they groom in the same fashion as cats, only they can’t regurgitate it so it’s very dangerous for rabbits. So it must be treated immediately because the animal might die from it.
- Cattle can get hairballs, but they don’t vomit so they are usually found after death. I’m just not aware if cattle actually die from hairballs.
- And last but not least; humans can get hairballs, although it’s very uncommon. This is usually a result of Trichophagia, Trichotillomania and Pica and usually happens to young girls.
Let’s just hope that I’m no longer jinxed by my hairball mockery after this post

Oh my, who would have thought! A National Hairball day. My cat has been really lucky about not getting hairballs considering how long his fur is. I hope my (and his) luck continues.
I remember watching Ripley’s Believe it or Not that showed some girl who had a really bad habit of eating and chewing her hair.
15-ish years later, her stomach was hurting so she went to the hospital to get her stomach cut open and the surgeons found a giant human hairball of the size of a football. ugh!
Oh my goodness that is actually pretty hilarious about the hairball on that day. I never actually thought about any other types of animals besides cats getting hairballs but I suppose it does make sense!
Oh the joys of owning a cat
Thank you for that other information, i feel well-informed now
Hahaha this cracked me up!
I’m glad to hear about your thoughts on Hairball Awareness Day because like I said in the past, I did want to hear them
Thanks for the info you shared!

Yuck, hairballs! A while back I was home alone and my cat left an equally great ‘present’. Cleaning it up was not fun.
And yes, Karma is a funny thing. What goes around often does come around. Atleast you’re sofa is not against you~
