What happens when you cook your dinner like you usually do but forgot about the newly installed smoke alarm right outside the kitchen?
Generally nothing happens, if you do it right. But if you’re me you actually manage to set it off, without burning and ruining your dinner by the way!
Recently my dad installed a smoke alarm in my apartment right in the area where my hallway, living room and kitchen ‘meet’. I was really happy that he installed it as I used to be very afraid of fire (long story short; I experienced one when I was 13). Unfortunately I sort of forgot it was there and started cooking my dinner. Using oil instead of margarine to bake my meat for a healthy change. Generally I open my window straight away to let the smoke out but this time I opened it a little later than usual. And that was my mistake, all of a sudden there was a deafening sound and at first it scared the shit out of me, but when I figured out it was the smoke alarm (or fire alarm if you will) I tried to find a chair to reach to the ceiling to take out the battery to shut it up.
Sam and Cas both tried to get away, Sam hid as far away from the noise as he could but Cas was in his cage, which was pretty close to the alarm. The poor bird had no place to hide! After the alarm was disconnected Sam still didn’t want to come out of hiding but Cas seemed fine, my ears where still ringing a little while after though.
But in the end I enjoyed a good dinner and both Cas and Sam aren’t traumatized by the noise and go about their daily business as if nothing happened. Let’s just hope I don’t set it off every time I cook!
I guess it wasn’t just the late opening of the window but also the fact that I used oil to bake instead of margarine. The combination of it might have set the alarm off as oil ‘smokes’ more than margarine when heated.
Whatever the cause was, looking back at it now it makes for a good laugh and I’m sure that my cooking skills will be the mocking point for a little while to all of those who heared the alarm go off

Haha, good job Chans! Don’t you have those um…I don’t know what they’re called in English. Overhead fans on top of the stove? Like you turn it on when you’re cooking, and it sucks the smoke and steam out…an exhaust fan?
Ugh. I hate those! I used to set off the fire alarm every single time I broiled something… it got SO old!
I’m glad you still had a good dinner though
And just consider it your way of announcing that dinner is ready to be served!
Oh no, poor Sam and Cas. I’m glad they weren’t traumatized by it. Don’t feel too bad about your cooking skills. It happens.
That must have been annoying. I used to have to sit underneath the fire alarm and fan cool air at it for the all the time my mum cooked (we were scared of taking out the batteries, in case we forgot to put them back in). Now it has mysteriously stopped, which is probably a bad thing now I think about it :\
Haha, i know about 10+ people that do that – some on a regular basis -_-.
Mine is located right outside the kitchen, which makes sense, since that’s where a fire would likely originate, but EVERY TIME we use the frying pan, it goes off, even with windows and doors open! Normally one of my sisters will stand below it waving a pillow or blanket to move the smoke away and yet it to stop, hahaha.
I actually put a smoke alarm right in the kitchen. If there is a fire, I want to know it as soon as possible! My mother’s cooking seemed to always set off the alarm. Mine almost never does. Probably a difference in how hot we set the stove. Anyway, if you have a fan, you can point it at the smoke alarm, and this will reduce the chance of it going off while cooking.

Haha, EVERY time my mom cooks she sets the smoke alarm off. It used to be a running joke at her house: *alarm* dinner’s ready!
