Grammar Grieve
Reading books is fun, at least to me. And it’s also supposed to be good for your development. But what if the book you’re reading is full of spelling errors and grammar mistakes, or even has complete sentences in it that make no sense.
Currently I’m reading a book that has been translated from Norwegian to Dutch. I started it earlier today and I’m already bothered by it. Not because the story line is boring, but because of all the spelling errors and grammar mistakes.
There are sentences in the book that miss certain words to make it a normal sentence. Sometimes they’ve added words that don’t need to be in there or added the same word twice in one sentence. I think the mistakes I saw so far cannot be counted on two hands, and I’m only on page 88!
The author can’t be blamed for this, but the translators and everyone involved in the publishing of this book are responsible for all these mistakes. You would think they check and proof read to see if everything is OK.
One mistake is not that bad, it happens, but if you lost count by the time your not even one third through the book is just crap. It makes me want to put the book down and stop reading, because it’s so annoying. On the other hand I want to keep reading it because the story itself is very interesting.
It’s not just this book I noticed it in, I also noticed it in a previous book I read from this particular author. Which makes sense as most likely it’s the same translator and publisher.
I’m seriously considering emailing the publisher to let them know about the mistakes, after all I think they want their readers to be pleased about the books they publish. And if they keep fucking up the whole book it will cost them readers, which will result in less sales, and less profit for the author who can’t help it.
Did you ever notice this in books? And if so, what did you do, or what would you do if you encountered it in books from the same publisher over and over again?

A elderly lady gets murdered on the steps of her house, and a young boy sees her body. He also sees an escaped psychiatric patient hiding in the forest behind her house.
This same psychiatric patient is a hostage in a bank robbery that same day. The bank robber and the patient get away from the bank and are hiding in an abandoned farm in the forest (close to this elderly lady’s house).
Eventually the young boy accidentally shows up at the abandoned farm and the reader has yet to find out who killed the old lady, what the bank robber wants and if that psychiatric patient really is crazy…
