The Unexplained, Explained
My last post wasn’t written out of grudge nor was it written out of selfishness. I merely wrote it to make people think about where their taxes are going and if they feel they are well spend. Maybe (and probably obviously) I didn’t get the point across properly as I was called both of the above.
Let’s first clarify this; I never had a bad youth, or a tough one, other than health wise. Which probably just means I was standing at the back of the queue when health was handed out.
So I certainly don’t feel that ‘I had it tough so others have to have it tough too’. That is never my attitude, as I feel that’s not a good way to go through life, even if you had it tough.
I also should have stated that the poor already get money from the government to help them pay for education. This, of course, are also taxes spend but I feel they are well spend as they actually help people.
But with the current change in laws, I feel that taxes aren’t going to be so well spend any more. The poor people will lose their benefits for education and will actually take a step down on the wealth ladder as they will lose money. They don’t have to worry about paying for school any more but the money that they received for education helped them get through every day life in general as well. I don’t see that as progress but actually another step back for these people.
My taxes (and every one else’s in The Netherlands) will now pay for children to go to school (we’re talking high school / middle school here) including the children of those people who can afford to pay for it themselves. I would prefer seeing my money spend on things that really help people; such as the health care system. There are many people that don’t have healthcare since the system changed and increased the price of health care. Apparently study shows there are more people that can’t afford health care compared to those that can’t afford education.
Knowing how important health is, I feel that those people should have help with benefits paid from my taxes. Or even to stick it back into education in a way of paying teachers more salary or even have them on the same salary (or a bit more) and free more money through taxes to hire more teachers and stop classes being dismissed due to lack of teachers, and that way increase quality of education. That, in my eyes, would be my taxes well spend.
I never meant to talk down on people who can’t afford to pay for education, or to make it sound like I had some sort of grudge or selfish reason to have other people pay for themselves. I just wanted to make more people aware of where their taxes are going to.

I’d be very happy if my taxes actually went towards helping less fortunate people out. I agree with you that health care is probably more important. You can’t go to school or work if you have poor health and health coverage.
