On Strike
The past week students of high schools have been taking their protests to the streets in wild strikes. The reason for this is the 1040 hours law that has been implemented. Which technically means that students have to go to high school 1040 hours a year. The main complaint seems to be the amount of hours ( said to be 8 hours of school a day).
A lot of these strikes have ended in students damaging cars and street furniture as well as throwing with eggs. Hundreds of students have been arrested.
Our minister of education has changed the rule a bit and has said that 40 of those hours can be used by the school to plan hours that aren’t mandatory. So that leaves 1000 hours a year that have to be attended.
If I do a little math; There are 40 school weeks with 5 school days each. Which is 200 school days a year. If you have to be there for 8 hours a day that means you would have 1600 hours of school a year. Basically that means they won’t be sitting at school 8 hours a day if you compare it with the 1040 hours law.
The catch? The only one I can find is the fact that school hours aren’t even 60 minutes; they last 45 minutes…
Friday there is an organized strike called for by LAKS. The student organization. Education inspectors have announced that anyone attending the strikes on Friday can be fined for not attending school; our education system doesn’t have a ‘strike right’ for students.
I guess the students won’t care too much about the fines; mostly the parents will be stuck with those. LAKS does announce that they want a peaceful strike with no damaging properties etc. I wonder how it will go and if it will help. I would understand more if they went on strike to improve quality of the education system (that’s never a bad thing). But that subject seemed to have sunk to the second spot on the strike list because they’re screaming about the hours.
I guess they should be happy with the hours, other countries have so many more hours and later on in life they will have to work 8 hours a day anyway so it’s good practice..

My parents would be permanently fined. My immune system is absolutely appalling and my attendance is staggeringly low. According to predictions I should really be failing school. My friends have frequently wondered aloud how well I’d do if I attended more.
That law seems quite… harsh. And I do wonder how effective it’ll be.
Why is it harsh, working life is harder than school life although students don’t realize that. They have it easy…
When I was at school, we did (does the maths) 1500 hours a year, every year

That seems reasonable for 1000 hours… I think your math makes sense. But then again, these are probably the students who don’t do well in math and that’s why they’re protesting about the hours… lol
