Ancestors

When my grandmother passed away we found a lot of remembrance cards from family that passed away a long time ago. It’s quiet interesting to see how they did that centuries ago. They had more than one type of remembrance card for each deceased, sometimes as many as three different ones.

So going through these cards my family and I decided to look into our ancestors. The cards have been laying in a drawer since the beginning of December but today I started my ancestor hunt. I’ve spend all day going through archives looking up names that I knew from the cards and from there looking up names that showed up and were relatives. Right now I’ve found 85 names going all the way back to the early 1800s.

Doing this is actually pretty addicting, I can’t wait to get back into those archives and dig up some more relatives.

Did you ever do any research on your ancestors?

I’ve always been interested in genealogy, unfortunately it’s not really possible for me…a lot of historical records were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and thus the only thing that I’d really have to go on is oral history passed down through the generations. Oh well. Good luck with your search though!

I would love to dig up my ancestors as well. I know it would be possible. I would love to make a huge family tree for my daughter (for my self but I need an excuse I can’t procrastinate). I hope you find something really great and interesting during your search. Maybe you aren’t even as Dutch as you thought :)

My great Uncle did it for me. It’s a bit out of date now because my auntie’s thought it would be fun to get married and reproduce. However it shouldn’t take long to add them in if I wanted to… It goes back centuries.

However it appears my ancestors were the “Pratts”. For some reason it makes me giggle everytime I read it. :(

It is fun to look at that sort of thing. On my Mum’s side, I’m descended from someone who organised a coup in the first twenty years of Australia’s (colonial) existence, and his Jewish wife. My mum and my paternal grandmother love to look at that sort of thing, so I learn a lot from both sides.

Some guy actually wrote a book about my Mum’s side of the family. And he’s not related to us in any way. He found names going all the way back to the 16th century. I think this is quite interesting, maybe I should do some research about my Dad’s side of the family.
