We’re Off
Day one of NaNoWriMo is behind us. I think for most participants it was an exciting day. We all have been looking forward to finally being able to start our novel (unless of course you started already and cheated
)
I have to say that I didn’t spend my day behind my computer writing like mad. Actually I think I spend a sane hour and a half on my novel-to-be. That included looking up info to confirm my knowledge about certain things. After all I want to make sure the details are right and it all fits perfectly. Currently my word count is 2,937. Which is not bad for day one I think, apparently you have to write at least 1,667 words a day to be able to win.
The fun thing about it for me is that I see the characters that I had in my head getting a real personality. They kind of come alive rather than being just a name on paper that has a certain job. And whether or not I reach the end mark of 50,000 words I’m sure it’s going to be a winning situation for me. There is a lot to learn from writing (or attempting to write) a novel.
For all those curious Georges out there, here’s a little excerpt for you to enjoy (or not).
Waiting for their drinks and deciding on their lunch Madison asked ‘So what is everyone up to? I’ve been stuck in my laboratory for so long that I don’t even know what’s going on in the outside world.’ Jools laughed ‘Laboratories can be very isolating, I know all about it. I’m currently working on the skeleton they found at the State Forrest running path. It’s more difficult than I thought it would be, the bones give me contradicting answers. I guess this is going to be a hard case with a lot of hours put into it. Good thing I get paid overtime.’
Penny snorted ‘Yeah like you mind working extra hours, you are addicted to clay modeling.’ Jools blushed while the others laughed. Everyone knew it was true, Jools really was addicted to modeling with clay, especially hard cases where her favorite thing.
It doesn’t really give anything away really, it just shows the three of the main five I have ‘created’ talking in a bar while having lunch.
This challenge is something I do for myself not for anyone else. I don’t have my hopes up of finding a publisher this way. Surely it would be nice if it happened, but I’d only be fooling myself if I honestly thought it would be good enough.
Maybe in the future I’ll post little excerpts but it won’t be too frequently, that would only bore you hehe.

Thanks for your tips Nile, I’ll definitely try to implement them. However, as far as I’m aware I didn’t make any spelling mistakes and when my character says anything it’s in quotations or did I miss anything?
I tried getting my poetry published when I was younger, unfortunately my poetry is in English and they don’t publish it here. I would have to send it abroad to stand a chance.
Sounds interesting. My only thing would be to consider words used in casual conversation, but I guess that may be different for me because I’m in the U.S.
I know! I did around 8,000 words on my first day. Yesterday was my sisters birthday so I did nearly 2,000 more and today I’m going to a party so I don’t think I’ll manage it then! And on Sunday it’s my birthday! My hopes of winning the Nano are fast fading.
And I thought your excerpt was good

Thanks for the tip Corinne! I’ll think of it when I write other conversations, however in this case if you put a bunch of people who work in forensics and / or laboratories together this is the kind of conversation you’ll get….
I can’t count the times I was having conversations during my lunch about feces, bacteria and other rotten things with my friends and colleagues. I suppose it’s a natural thing for us ‘labbies’ to do. How silly or unnatural or dirty it may sound to others hehe.
That’s a pretty good start your off to, Chans. Hopefully, if we’re good you’ll let us read the whole thing, eh?
I wish I could’ve done NaNoWriMo, but since I couldn’t, I wish you the best of luck!
Oy. Don’t think I’ll have any lunches with you
Geeze, bacteria? What a thing to talk about during lunch.
Bacteria is very interesting Corinne. I’m partial to a bit of fungi too… especially the type that causes athletes foot. Yummy.

That is good that you want to write. Remember to also when you write, to try and practice your punctuation. When your characters speak, their words are in quotations and then afterwards, you make a new line to signify the end of their comment and change from either another character or the actual narration.
I write a lot. Lately I have been writing a lot of fanfiction. One of the fanfics are over 85,000 words. I have 2 novels over 95,000 words each that I am going to pitch to a new agent (I have one for my poetry, but they do not represent novelists, so I have to seek another lit agent) and hopefully something will happen.
Writing no matter the reason is hard work.
