Pets

Once again it has been proved that even pets can be dangerous. A lot of people think that pets aren’t dangerous or won’t turn against their owner / other people, just because they haven’t in the past.

Surely most pets won’t do things like this; but you have to always keep in mind that they are animals and have a mind of their own. Or as in this case nature forced them to do it. What strikes me is that a lot of people say; no he doesn’t bite or no she isn’t mean. You can’t really say that. All you can say is; no he hasn’t bitten anyone in the past or she hasn’t been mean in the past. It might scare off a few people if this comes up while they ask to pet him/her (and to be honest you should always ask first!) but this way one gets a slight warning / reminder that animals can always act out.

A stranger petting a dog can be considered a threat by the animal and it will act on it. Sometimes I see children left unsupervised with an animal and I always wonder if the parents realize that a situation with even the sweetest dog can change in something that turns out to be a disaster.
Everyone has heard the story of the family dog that turned vicious and attacked a child. Of course in ‘our’ world we consider animals to be lower living beings to ourselves and we put the blame with the animal, which in most cases means that the animal gets put down. Which also happens with the dog in the above mentioned story, the dog is put to sleep and only after it died they discover staples in the dog’s ears.

Would you just patiently sit without saying a word or avoiding another staple while someone does it to you? Than why do we expect a dog (or any other animal) to do so. The story is, of course, just that, a story. Although it holds some truth. The blame is not always to be found with the animal (actually I believe in most cases it isn’t their fault). The boar in the article I mentioned earlier was merely acting as he would have done in the wild in such a situation; attacking the person close to his female.

I’m not saying all animal are mean; but they can be. Even if they are the sweetest animal you’ve ever known. What I’m trying to bring across is the idea that any situation with an animal has the potential to become dangerous.

A little example? My horses; no matter how much I trust them, and how much I love them. I always keep in the back of my head they are animals that will act on a situation like they would have in the wild. If a situation scares them enough they will run, it’s in their nature. My horses (and all animals actually) will send out signals and warnings. I’m able to read my animals and anticipate on what they are going to do 99% of the time.
In my opinion animals are generally born ‘sweet’, but there is the occasional ‘nasty’ animal like their are ‘nasty’ people without even considering their background. I also think that animals can be turned into mean creatures, if you raise them the wrong way i.e. without teaching them right from wrong they will be mean.

Animals who are a danger to society should be put down. That might sound mean, harsh and in contradiction with the above but an animal that can’t walk free and has to be locked up 24/7 because otherwise he will attack someone or another animal has no life. First there is the danger to his surroundings but also it’s very unfair for the animal to live that way. Actually that’s no life at all. However every situation with an aggressive / mean animal is different. You can’t apply the same ‘rules’ on every situation they have to be judged separately.

This wasn’t written to scare you. It was done to make you aware of the fact that animals are still animals even if we domesticate them. Learn to read the signs so you can anticipate and act on it. If you think the situation is changing where you are no longer in control you will be able to see it sooner and change the situation back before it gets out of hand.

Most of all love your animals, threat them with respect and be consistent, don’t let them do things one day and punish for it the next day.

With that said; it’s not a guarantee that things will never happen but you get my drift..
