Traffic’s a Bitch

Traffic really brings out aggressive behavior in everyone, including me. I admit it; I’m pretty aggressive behind the wheel. Not that I’ll get violent or that I go way above the speed limit (all be it a few kilometers here and there) but I do curse a lot behind the wheel, and sometimes when there really is a big idiot in my way, the middle finger tends to pop up.

This doesn’t mean that I think I’m the perfect driver, I know I’m not. But it is funny when people think you are an idiot when you are applying the rules and keep to the speed limit. The same thing happened yesterday, I was driving back from work around 11 PM and I have to take the highway to get home. On that particular part of the highway is a speed limit of 100 km/h. Which, to me, is a decent speed and I get home in about 20 minutes.

Sometimes though, they put up signs to change the speed limit. Which was the case yesterday. They changed the speed from 100 km/h to 90 km/h (which usually gets changed again after a few kilometers to about 70 km/h) and they closed down a lane. Because they changed the limit I figured they were either working on the road or an accident had happened, so I slow down to the indicated speed.

To my surprise I see a lot of cars (and trucks) pass me with a speed that is well above the original limit. Some of them indicating to me that I must be an idiot for changing my speed (along with some other people, so I wasn’t the only ‘idiot’).
The main reason for me to slow down is because I don’t want to get a ticket, currently they are doing a lot of speed checks, especially where they changed the limits for whatever reason. I do have another reason though; the people working on the road or assisting in an accident are putting their lives at risk to make the roads better or help others.

I think it’s very inconsiderate of all the ‘speeders’ to not think about the people working on the roads. After all their work will benefit us all in the end, and besides that, it is someones father / brother / husband / son (usually it’s men) working on the road. If you slam into them, you wouldn’t be the first to kill someone working on the road by your own stupidity because you wanted to get home three minutes earlier.
A lot of people act though, but when it comes to it they can’t live with what they’ve done ; killing or badly injuring a person. It actually infuriates me to know one thinks it’s not going to happen to them anyway because they can control the car. The same goes for alcohol and driving, I never sit behind the wheel if I had a drink, even though you’re allowed to drive if you had one glass. I don’t even get in the car with someone who has been drinking, unless I’m the designated driver of course. It’s not only your own life you have to think about, usually you destroy someone else’s life and you get off without a scratch.

What kind of driver are you; do you keep to the speed limit (or around there ;) ) or do you like to think you’re above the rules and break them by going with the speed of light? And do you even consider getting behind the wheel with one glass of alcohol down, or do you go for the sober designated driver?

yeah heavy traffic congestion would always make me go “grrrrr” most specially when it’s hot and you are sweating like a pig inside a Philippine jeepney. hehehehe.

Oh, I’m a terrible driver. I always speed (at at least five km above the speed limit). At least I’d never drink and drive though. Not even if it’s just a sip of alcohol – I still won’t drive.

I don’t drive when I had a sip of alcohol either, I strongly believe the two don’t mix together so I don’t.

I always speed too but only about five km above speed limit. Surely it’s not the right thing to do but at least I don’t pass people working on the road with 30 km over the speed limit :-/

I don’t have my driver’s license so that basically answers your question right there. I have no idea what I’d do if I were a driver though. I’d probably suck. ;)

I can’t drive, so none of this is a problem for me! However, when I start driving, I have this stupid little fear that I will run over peoples mailboxes!

Tracey on August 30th, 2006 @ 1:45 PM

That’s not a problem for me, Tracey.
If you were to drive over someone’s mailbox here that would probably mean you would run into their front door…. What you see here most is an opening in the front door where the mail goes through, so it’s not really a box. Although you do see the mailboxes you probably mean here too, occasionally.

Oh, I haven’t started driving yet but I “feel the need for speed”. Yeah, I am one of those people who love cars – my dream is to drive a Ferrari. When I saw a 360spider, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. But even though I know I will speed – I will never drink and drive, and I certainly won’t speed around residential areas. If I really want to go over the limit I’ll just start rally driving or something ;) , so at least then I’m just endangering myself and not others!

I love to speed. Going five to ten kilometres per hour over the limit is for some reason exhilarating. Love it! I’ve also adapted really bad driving habits, like talking on my cell phone, driving with one hand, eating/driving (no drinking/driving of ANY sort, though), shuffling through my CDs while speeding down the road…. Mmhmmm.
