Coffee, Part II

Being the coffee addict that I am, I’m always looking for new flavors of coffee to put in my Senseo® machine. Or in the case of absence of Senseo® pads; to put in the coffee maker I snatch from my mom if needed. My shelves are filled with bags of Kenya blend, Mocha, Regular, Decaf (for the late at night I-want-a-cup-of-coffee mood), and my current favorite; Vienna.

Yesterday while watching the Discovery Channel (another one of my addictions), they showed a short film on the most expensive coffee in the world; Kopi Luwak.

Kopi Luwak or Civet coffee
coffee made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Common Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus).

From Wikipedia

Sounds ‘tasty’ doesn’t it? Apparently it’s really good though, and not as bitter as normal coffee. It’s believed that this is due to enzymes in the stomach of the Civet which break down the proteins that give coffee its bitter taste.

As much as I like to try different flavors, at a price ranging between $120 and $450 per pound it really isn’t my cup of tea coffee. I’ll just have to stick to my Senseo® flavors, until I win the lottery.

A sad side note though, is the fact that due to the SARS scare in 2004, thousands of Chinese Civets have been killed. Because it was feared that these cats may help spread SARS. People still bought the coffee despite the fear; so for the coffee production it wasn’t such a sad thing but with these cats being slaughtered in high numbers it’s horrible for the environmental balance. After all every creature on earth has it’s meaning and purpose, take one away and you break the beautiful circle Mother Nature has so carefully put together.

It is really sad about the cats – we seem to have a lot of scares. Sars, bird flu, etc and yet little of them ever turn out to be a real epidemic. So we scare ourselves over nothing.

As for your coffee addiction, you may have one but even if you were that rich paying that much for a pound of coffee is just… ludicrous. Maybe just the once to test it, of course. Or perhaps I just wouldn’t know as I am not a coffee addict!

I’ve never been much of a coffee drinker… but I absolutely *adore* the smell of it. I would feel like I was in heaven if I could wake up to the smell off coffee every singe morning!
