Not what you bargained for

Something I’ve always wanted to do in life, even before the CSI hype, was become a forensic scientist. Work with DNA and other evidence to help solve cases etc. That’s what really interests me. Unfortunately there isn’t a big work field in The Netherlands for it. We have one forensic laboratory which, if I remember correctly, only has six people employed.

I do have the education and qualifications to work there, but with six people employed and a lot of other people wanting the jobs it’s not going to happen. That’s too bad, and although I won’t give up of one day working on this field (or the profiling field) I really enjoy my current job.

Too bad I didn’t go to a high school in Florida. They discovered a real corpse when they were looking for clues at a mock crime scene. How weird would that be, you go out to look for clues planted at a fake crime scene and than you find a dead body that turns out to be the real deal. I can understand some of them might have some sort of mild trauma after this, seeing a corpse is just not for everyone.
It really would have been my cup of tea though. I mean it’s not like I really enjoy dead people or anything but it has always interested me for as long as I can remember. Before studying microbiology and genetics I even considered become a pathologist.
Yeah for some that might sound morbid, and maybe it is, but for some reason it interests me. Isn’t it great if you can help solve a murder or something and put the bad guys behind bars because you were able to gather clues that led to the killer?

When I was still in college we went to a museum which was located at another University. They had all kinds of body parts and organs bottled up for you to see. All these things were donated to science by the ‘original owner’ (by lack of better description). They even had a real head there, one side of it was normal, just like you would see when you look at any person walking about on this planet. The other side however was layered. They showed you different layers of the face, including muscles and things like that. Now that’s an interesting sight. Honestly, the way a face is constructed is amazing!

Anyway I better cut this short before I get carried away and all of you start throwing up the last things you ate.

I’m um….eating now! ;) Nah, I actually usually don’t get affected by this sorta stuff. Not just by talking about it anyway, actually seeing it would be a different matter.

Oh yeah, I sorta like to be part of the CSI team, but only after I was hooked to the CSI series / episoded. LOL :)

And you’re right, it’s nice to actually solve a crime and put the killers behind the bar. And woah, they found a real corpse. Now that’s freaky. :O

I have to admit that I’m one of those people who only got interested in forensic science since CSI. Nowadays whenever I see one of my hairs somewhere, I’m like, “If someone were to commit a crime here sometime soon, they’d use my hair as DNA evidence”. *snort* Yeah, I’m a dork. ;)

I would imagine that certainly would be traumatic. After the initial shock I would have found it very cool. Forensic Files on Court TV is one of my favorite shows. I’ve also considered this field, its too bad you can’t get work there.

And thanks for your comment on my site. =)

the job like this is really for brave, enduring people.
