Reliving My Childhood

After a topic about a childhood toy on a Dutch forum I started thinking about my childhood. On a hunt for the name of this particular toy*, I came across a whole lot of TV shows I used to watch when I was young.

Who remembers My Little Pony, The Gummi Bears, The Smurfs, The Snorks, Rainbow Brite, The Popples, The Wuzzles, The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin, The Berenstain Bears, Care Bears and others? I feel so old looking back at all these shows.
Nowadays you will see TV shows that have a lot of swearing in them, some even a lot of violence and kids today are completely sucked in by these shows. Just like I was with the previously mentioned shows. The only difference is that in today’s world it’s perceived as normal that there is violence in TV shows for children. Are the feel good shows not good enough anymore for the kids of this day and age? Or is just that because the whole society gets tougher TV shows must be too to (in a way and don’t ask me how) prepare them for the real world?

It’s somewhat sad to no longer see reruns of the old shows when flicking channels. After all you get this special feeling when seeing one of those shows that remind you of your childhood. That’s the case for me anyway.

The one thing that is extra special for me though is my Monchhichi Doll. I got the doll when I was very young, I think I wasn’t older than four at the time, although I can’t be sure. My grandfather gave it to me and I still have it somewhere. Just looking at the picture of the doll reminds me of my grandfather. He passed away a few years ago and it makes me sad as well as happy to look at the doll. The memories I have of my grandfather are wonderful, and the doll only adds to it.
Just looking at it now makes me want to go to my parents house and dig the doll up from under the dust in the attic and relive a bit of my youth.

What’s your favorite toy / TV show from your childhood?

* I never found the name of that toy, it’s a flat rubber disc you could sort of turn inside out. After you had done that you quickly needed to put it on the floor (or any other flat surface) and it would jump up in the air because it was inside out. Does anyone recognize this?

Oh, I used to watch ALL of the shows you listed! I especially had a soft spot for The Popples, Care Bears, and Berenstain Bears. MEMORIES!

Have you heard of a show called “I Love the 80′s” on VH1? Watching that made me relive what it was like in my childhood… *sigh* And do you remember Pound Puppies? *SIGH* Hahaha… Your Monchichi doll sounds like how I feel towards these stuffed dolphins and whales I have from Sea World. I had them ever since I was… 4? They’re still in my room, on a shelf to be admired. :)

I think the toy you’re talking about is called a ‘Popper.’ At least that’s what they call them over at this video arcade place where I used to go. It was one of the prizes you could get for having like, 20 tickets.

Surely nothing beats my favourite kids TV show of all time – Mr. Squiggle? It was an Australia-only show though, which just shows how the rest of the world missed out on the best. :P

As for toys, I was definitely a Barbie type of girl. Barbies all the way!

TV for kids at present is crap.

Amy, that’s exactly it! Thanks :) . The Dutch word for it is (supposedly) Plopper and gave me no results at all. Popper however showed me what I was looking for.

Amanda, Mr Squiggle somehow reminds me of Pinoccio. And Barbies, ooh yes I have plenty of those still lying around somewhere.

Awww, the good old times … I actually remember most of these … Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, No, No, No, No, Yes … they were so great, really suitable for kids and not like the stuff that’s on TV nowadays. And I know this warm and fuzzy feeling when flipping through the channels and then coming into a rerun of those … saw the GummiBears a while ago ;-) And: Awww, Monchichi. I never had a doll by myself but a friend had and I was kinda jealous. Cute ones.

I loved Barbies. And Lego. And Playmobil. (Don’t know if there are different names around). As for TV Shows, Dr. Snuggles has been very cool :-)
