Pleasure

There are , of course, all kinds of pleasure. But the one I’m talking about here is viewing pleasure. No not the -view from your window- kind of pleasure. For me that’s no pleasure at all, I either look out on the parking lot across the street or straight into my neighbor’s living room. Believe me, nothing good to see there!

I meant website viewing pleasure. As most of you, I’m online every day. I surf a lot, of course I visit my dailies, but I also like to find random (personal) sites and look through them, leave a comment here and there and find the next site to haunt.

The things you see on there are pretty weird sometimes in terms of viewing pleasure. And that’s not positive!
Some things I see quiet often and that annoy me are really small fonts or spaced out fonts you can hardly read, images that need loading time close to 10 minutes (and I’m on freaking broadband!) and let’s not forget the wrongly aligned layouts. Maybe the latter has to do with me using Fx instead of IE though, which brings me to one of the main points of viewing pleasure, cross browser compatibility. You want to make sure your site looks good and the way you want it in most browsers. That way your visitor doesn’t need to feel frustrated because your site looks off due to the use of a different browser than you do.
It will take some extra time to make it cross browser compatible but in the end it’s well worth it: Your visitors will come back as they liked what they saw.

You want your visitor to stay on your website right? To browse around, read your content and maybe leave a comment but most of all, have your visitor return.
As with most things in life, first impressions are important. If someone has to wait a long time for your site to load, they are going to leave. Actually one is most likely to move away from an ‘unpleasant’ website within 30 seconds of opening it.

So if you’re designing your next layout, pay attention to the following:
- Don’t use small fonts or space them out too much (we might be able to read it but what about the visually impaired?)
- Make sure your graphics load fast enough (as far as I’m aware my images load fast, if they don’t please let me know)
- Make your website cross browser compatible, that way everyone can view your site the way you intended it.

There are of course many more things you should think of when designing a website. Just remember that you need to be willing to learn new things to improve the quality of your website and with that, the viewing pleasure for your visitors.

Yes I’m frustrated because of the lack of attention by some people for their visitor’s viewing pleasure. After all what’s the point in making a website if you don’t want anyone to see it (properly that is).

Gaaah..My website used to be incompatible with Firefox..but now, since I’ve started using Firefox, I had to overhaul my sites. Now they look a bit off in IE.. hehe.

I think my sites load pretty fast (do they?)..and I’m on dial-up ^_^

When I first started making websites they weren’t cross browser compatible either. That’s because I wasn’t aware that there were other browsers than IE.

But if you are aware that there are other browsers why not use this knowledge to your advantage and do something with it to cater your visitors.

Your site loads fast for me, but I’m on broadband so probably not the best person to judge ;)

I worry about this kind of stuff all the time, but when I’m working out my layouts I check them both out in Firefox and IE. I guess most of my layout flubs come from personal preferences and such, because some people don’t like my style and some do. So it’s really hard to please everybody.

But you commented on my site so I guess it couldn’t have been THAT BAD. And for that I thank you.

One of my most annoying pet peeves! But, I’ve began to stirr away from the websites like that, but sometimes I usually tell them to get reviewed (if on a forum or w/e)
