Creativity got Flushed

Since today’s weather was so bad, I didn’t really want to go outside. So instead I found myself a comfortable spot on the sofa, took out my beloved laptop and started browsing around to random sites.

Besides the occasional Mozilla incompatible website (where IE comes to the rescue, although I never thought I’d say that) I was shocked to see at least three websites with the same layout. Of course it happens more often that some people use the same theme for i.e. WordPress but usually there are quiet a few differences. Unfortunately all of these sites had nearly the same color scheme and exactly the same set up. The only thing I found different on all sites was the heading image.

That’s when I realized, creativity got flushed down the drain for a lot of people. I wouldn’t know how quickly to get rid of a layout that is 99% similar to someone else’s. Actually I think I have said this before, there are always similarities between websites, personal websites always have things in common. There’s nothing wrong with that at all, it just frustrates me to know that surfing a small part of the web can bring up at least three websites with the exact same layout. Wait, it doesn’t just frustrate me, it frightens me. Does that mean creativity is disappearing completely? – I sure hope not! So if everyone can now please dust off that tucked-away creativity and starts using it again, you’ll make at least one person very happy!

I assume one would want a website that stands out from all the other sites around. I know I want mine to stand out from the rest. We’ll leave undecided whether or not it actually is ;) .

Before I get any angry commenters, I have nothing against themes in general. They are there to be used. I’m merely stating that I prefer to see something personal and creative from the owner rather than a pre made layout.

i remember i saw this website splendid website once that was just like no other… and i never really saw a website like that again. it was junk food themed, and everything was drawn by hand. it also had amazing content. nowadays, i think most websites lack content, too (which is fine, seeing as my website can’t say it has much at the moment either, haha). oh well, i hope you stumble across a website that just makes you say ‘wow’ sometime soon.

the da vinci code doesn’t stray away from the book completely, but the parts that made me want to turn the page so badly in the book were lifeless in the movie. it’s a good idea to save money for something else… like maybe clothes. ;)

I like most sites I visit, don’t get me wrong. It just frustrates me that with a bit of surfing in a relatively small part of the web you stumble across at least three sites with exactly the same layout.

Seriously after reading all those ‘bad’ reviews about the film, I’m really considering waiting for it on DVD.

I couldn’t agree more! I found when I switched to WP, as easy as it is to blog (when you finally work out all the bugs and figure it out), it leaves very little room for creative freedom in terms of layouts/coding. Templates are taking over, and it sadens me :( All these 12 year olds that think having a myspace or a template LJ means having a blog, but it really isnt. *sigh*
At least you are safe to say you’re not a template-clone! I love your v. original header :D
Take care!
