Sam’s Second Surprise

Sam had another surprise for me today, although this one was a lot less amusing and less easier to fix. This morning I noticed he went to the litter box a lot. Usually he goes on the clock so I thought it was a little weird. Obviously I went to check the litter box only to find that he was trying to pee a lot, but hardly anything came out!!!

As a cat owner and sister of a vet technician, I know a thing or two about cats. And this was one of the things that wasn’t good. Since I always want to take the best care of my animals, I called the vet immediately and explained the situation. No, he wasn’t making any noises of pain and yes he was still urinating. Indicating that the urine system probably wasn’t blocked. But they still advised me to come in either today or make an appointment for tomorrow.

I don’t want to make Sam wait another day, who knows how quickly this thing could turn for the worse. He doesn’t like to be in his carrier since the last time he went to the vet (castration trauma I think ;) ) and it took me a while to get him into it. A lot of scratches later I managed to get him from underneath the bed and managed to get him in the carrier.

Luckily we didn’t have to wait long in a waiting room with only dogs, and we quickly escaped to the treatment room. The vet inspected Sam’s bladder, which was empty as well as his penis (hey, it’s all part of nature!) which didn’t seem to be blocked. Good news! Sam got an antibiotics shot as well as a prescription for special food that will dissolve any crystals that might be in the bladder or urinary system. All I have to do is keep an eye on him and make sure he pees.

If a cat blocks up it can go wrong very quickly, it can be life threatening. Let’s just hope that doesn’t happen. From what I see now, he’s peeing very often still, but it seems to go easier and more at a time so I hope the antibiotics are doing its job.

Sam is like a kid to me and I don’t want anything to happen to him nor do I want him to be in pain. Some people might have waited longer before they went to the vet but I just want to be sure nothing more was going on.
Even though we’ve been to the vet and he’s peeing and drinking, I’m still very worried. Hopefully things will pick up by tomorrow. If only my picky eater would not refuse his prescription food it would make me feel a little more secure.

So now both me and Sam are sick. Honestly I don’t care as much about me being sick but I do worry about Sam. And for those of you who don’t know what’s ‘wrong’ with me; I have arthritis, it has been bothering me more for the last few weeks. It’s hard to walk or carry anything as it hurts, so dragging Sam into the vet wasn’t easy, and I’m going to pay for it pain-wise tomorrow, but it’s worth it because I only want the best for Sam.

Aww poor Sam. I hope that the antibiotics help and he gets better fast! I hope that you start feeling better too. It was nice of you to make sure that Sam was taken care of even though you weren’t feeling well yourself. I would do the same for my cat, Moko.

I am glad that Sam is OK . I would be heartbroken if anything was to happen to either of my two cats .

Oh I’m glad that you know enough about cats and that you caught that! I probably wouldn’t have noticed.

I hope both you and Sam will be lots better soon :)

Aww, poor Sam. We had to take our cat Ebony to the vets just after Easter as she had cystitis. It’s so hard to get cats into the box to take it, and it cried every 2 seconds all the way there and back. Feeding cats things is hard too. Ours are so fussy, but luckily tablets are easy to give them now.
