Miranda IM
After months of absence in the IM world, I’m back! One of the main reasons for leaving it alone (besides lack of time) is the time it takes for all the different messengers I was using to load and stay connected. It also took up a lot of usage and make my computer slower than I’d like it to be (and it’s generally not slow at all).
Of course there are other messenger systems out there that combine these things but I never really liked them. At the time they didn’t look appealing to me. Yesterday though, someone pointed me into the direction of Miranda-IM. A messenger system that combines multiple others and is very light on system resources and extremely fast.
It can even fit on a USB stick or floppy disk (does anyone still use those?!). Which might be ideal for taking it with you or using it on another computer without having to download it again.
It seemed like a good idea, so I downloaded it, ran it and got hooked. Yes, it’s easy, it’s fast, it’s fun and it looks like crap. Yeah, I really said that; it looks like crap. But that is not a problem. You can customize it however you like, downloading skins, themes and plugins to serve your needs. Or you can even make your own skins / plugins.
Yes it takes a bit of fiddling around with the settings and getting some plugins to make it look nicer but I now have a light, fast, good looking program that runs all my systems in one which I could put on a floppy disk (if I had one…). I can really recommend it. It makes going online so much more fun again!
I did throw a lot of people out of my MSN list, I never talk to them and Miranda showed me that a lot don’t even have me on their list anymore, so why would I bother having them take up space? But in the process of deleting people, I probably got a little too enthusiastic; maybe deleting some I shouldn’t have.
So if you don’t see me on your list anymore but would like to be on it. Feel free to add me again.
- MSN brooks_cathy@hotmail.com
- AIM ChanSon1983
- Yahoo Chans1983
I will be cleaning out my AIM and Yahoo list as well, and I might get carried away again, so if you feel you have been wrongly deleted, just add me
.

If I still IM-ed, that will be very useful! Unfortunately, I stopped IM-ing like… 3 years ago? It used to be a part of my daily life though
Welcome back lmao. I change my msn so much that I never really keep a stable buddylist. I actually only talk to a couple of people now haha. It’s on but I barely talk to the people on it xP
Hey!!! Thanks so much for your comment regarding Auckland and the photos. By the way, I updated with more photos. Pretty ones. He he.
I am usually on AIM but away most of the time, ha. I suck at being on AIM. As for MSN, I don’t think I’ve used that in a long time either. Miranda kind of reminds me of Trillian.
I only use MSN, so I don’t need a multi-platform IM program, but that sounds fantastic- and fitting on a floppy disk! I don’t even remember how much a floppy disk can hold, a few megabytes? Awesome.
I think I would be careful about a program claiming it knows whether or not you are on someone else’s messenger list, unless its only looking at other Miranda users.
I can’t imagine MSN posting a list of my messenger friends.
Kerry, MSN has that option build in as well, it only counts for people who are on your list too, you can’t see random people that aren’t on your list who added you. So it’s not that weird.

I think I tried miranda and didn’t like it that much. On my PC I use Digsby because it also integrates with twitter, myspace, and facebook. Pidgin is also a decent opensource alternative.
