After reading this news article today I can only really draw one conclusion, although I hate to say it. Dutch fans are probably one of the stupidest supporters around. Or at least quiet a bunch of them. I have to be fair and say that with 100,000 Dutch supporters around for the Euro 2008 matches it’s easy to mistake someone for someone else. But this really tops it…

How can they mistake Swiss railway workers in Berne for supporters of the Dutch soccer team? I mean, railway workers are probably not jumping around, wearing stupid hats, drinking alcohol and helping people to get to places where they need to be. If you see someone doing their job, it’s most likely they are not there to support a foreign team, even if they are wearing an orange vest. Besides why would anyone follow anybody ONTO the tracks no matter what team they support.

A Dutch article about the same issue stated that a big group of singing and dancing Holland supporters followed the workmen onto the tracks thinking they were also supporters for the same team, while in fact they were railway employees either fixing things or pointing people in the right direction.

I can actually visualize it; a big, loud group of fans following a few men in orange vests. It seems kind of funny but if you think about it, it’s pretty dangerous. There is no way you would get a big group off the tracks in case of a train passing by. Especially if (most likely anyway) they are intoxicated.

The autorities in Switzerland replaced all orange vest by yellow ones, and even send some ahead to Basel where we are playing Russia tomorrow in the quarter finals.

There is said a lot about the Dutch fans in the media, not just now with the European Cup but a few years ago with the World Cup as well. We made the headlines in many countries due to our orange outfits and love for the national team. I guess stupidity is another thing to add to that list…
