Funny…

or not? I like to think of it as the latter. You probably wonder what I’m on about so let me explain. A female TMF (Dutch MTV) VJ married a stranger in Las Vegas a few days ago. She divorced him a little later. They were on a shoot in Las Vegas and wanted to do something original. So they decided to get a stranger to marry Nikki (the VJ).

Apparently it was a wedding complete with white dress and all. Nikki also has a boyfriend (who she has been with for many years), and although the article doesn’t state how he feels about it all, I would certainly be ‘not amused’ (to say the least) if I were him.

I can understand that people get married in Vegas in the spur of the moment, especially if you are there as a couple and really love each other. But to marry a complete stranger (officially, mind you!) just for the fun of it, while you have a solid relationship is something I really can’t understand.

This wedding will be shown on TV here next week, on a TV station that has a lot of teenagers as an audience. What are they supposed to learn from this. That it’s OK to marry someone just for the ‘fun’ of it? That it’s OK to do this even though you are in a relationship, and that it doesn’t really count as cheating? Or is there something that I’m missing that is positive and a good learning experience?

To me it’s not funny, not even close to it. Marriage to me is something to be taken seriously, and even though there is a high divorce rate, that doesn’t mean you can go about and marry anyone you want to just for fun.

All Nikki had to say about it was; “It was hilarious!” yeah, totally ROTFLOL…

All I can say is I agree!

To me, marriage is a soul-deep commitment to someone else, a ‘rite of passage’ into taking a path of life that includes someone walking it with you. It is not something to be taken lightly and therefore ‘jumped’ into without a thought – and also jumped out of!

I don’t think marriage should ever lead to divorce, but unfortunately like you say, it does, often. Too often in my opinion!
