Assumption

How come people assume others are related because of the way they look? I had it happen twice to me last week by colleagues who hit up my sister’s profile on a profile site similar to facebook. Her photo shows her and a friend and both my colleagues automatically assumed her friend to be my sister because of certain ‘similarities’.

When I asked them why they thought my sister’s friend was actually my sister I got the same answer; because of the hair colour and the glasses. Although the hair colour is a give-away as both my sister, her friend and I have dark hair, so it appears that they made the link just by a pair of glasses.

I know people assume a whole lot, and everybody does it. It just surprises me that certain assumptions can be made by something simple and common as a pair of glasses. Because, in general, that would mean that every woman with dark hair and glasses would be my sister, which would make for a whole lot of siblings (fun at parties!!). That would even make Amanda my sister while we have nothing else in common when it comes to appearance than dark hair and glasses.

This whole thing leaves me with one question. What is the weirdest link you ever made between people just by assuming something?

A teacher once asked if I was half-Greek. Since I’m not, I answered no and asked why. It turned out that she thought my friend Cassi was my cousin. It’s actually a common mistake people make, but people never realise that my sister is related to me. Cassi and I are the exact same height, while my little sister is taller, so I think you’re probably right! Craziness…

I’m Asian, and thus, everyone in the world who’s Asian must be my sister, cousin, second cousin, third cousin, aunt. *rolls eyes*
