Free Rice
Most of us don’t even realize it, but when we ponder about what our dinner is going to be today we actually have a choice between hundreds of different things to eat. While others don’t have a choice, or even worse; don’t have anything to eat at all.
I believe that small things can make a difference (such as TOMSShoes or Downloading a Song) and therefor I’m really happy that I came across Free Rice. Free Rice is a site that basically hosts a game; you have to find synonyms for words shown to you. For every correct answer you get 10 grains of rice that are donated to people who really need it. This might not seem much but since you can play for as long as you like (even when you get an answer wrong) you can really donate a lot of rice grains.
Technically the rice is paid for by the advertisements on the site and it will be distributed by the United Nations World Food Programme. The Free Rice FAQ states the following about the payment of the rice.
Who pays for the donated rice?
The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at Free Rice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). We commend these companies for their participation at Free Rice.
Some of you might be wondering what’s in it for you. How about learning new vocabulary? And as silly as it might sound to a few people reading this; you can’t deny that vocabulary and grammar of a big part of the youth is at an all time low…
So, play the Free Rice game, you got nothing to lose, only to g(r)ain…

I found this a few weeks ago and have been absolutely addicted ever since! Learning vocabulary is practically a hobby of mine and that combined with knowing you’re ‘doing your bit’ is… well, it’s how I’ve stayed playing for hours.
