Online Help

Sometimes I wonder if people take the “you’ll find the answer online” thing a bit too serious. Today I was browsing the Internet and ended up on a forum I go to a lot. In the general section I found a girl (or I’m assuming it’s a girl to be honest) asking a question about her insurance.

By itself that wouldn’t be so strange but her problem was this; Her insurance company send her a letter saying she was behind in this months payment. She checked her bank account online only to find that the payment had been deducted from her account (which you can set here to do automatically). So in fact it had been payed for, but she still got the letter. I thought this was going to end up in a struggle between her, the insurance company and the bank or something about this payment, and that she was seeking some sort of legal advice on what to do next..

But of course I see problems where there aren’t any and her question only was; The bank account states it has been deducted and the insurance company says I’m behind. What do I do now?

This is not the first time I see someone ask a really logical question online like it’s a major dilemma to figure out. Is it just me or do people see the online help suggestion as a reason to throw common sense overboard?

I really don’t see how the answer to this girls question is so hard, you call the insurance company and see if the payment crossed the letter they send and go from there. I seriously think sometimes that the internet only makes people dumber…

The problem is of course, that we’re generally just becoming too dependent upon the Internet for everything.

On some LJ communities I visit, I see posts for people asking how to make the soles of shoes unslippery, or something like that. Surely it’s just common sense that you just have to scuff them on concrete?

Oh, I know what you mean! We’ve become increasingly dependent on the internet (specifically other people on the internet) for everything!

I go on Yahoo Answers every now and then and it really bugs me how some students post the most annoyingly stupid questions like: “When was Hitler born?” If they typed up “Hitler” on the Yahoo search engine, they can easily find his bio and find out when he was born…

Oh I agree. I read on a forum where a girl asked how she could make her toddler stop taking the knives in the bottom drawers! It obviously never occurred to her that moving the knives and sharp and pointy objects to another drawer would be a solution…

I cannot believe the stupidity of some people.
