Fair Play?
What happened to the soccer matches on Sunday afternoon, that you could go and enjoy with the whole family. These days soccer is not only about fun anymore but about fights and destruction before, after and even during the match.
I always wondered why fans fight when a match is over, or why they set up meetings to fight with each other on certain dates. Maybe I found a (partial) answer to my question. The people who are supposed to be setting an example and do everything in terms of fair play, aren’t afraid to beat the crap out of their opponent either.
Today I was watching the friendly match between the Dutch national team and the Cameroon national team. At some point, the referee had to hand out a few yellow cards to some players on the Cameroon team. No one really thought much about it as it were deserved cards too.
After 45 minutes there was the break and when the players returned to the field, our commentator told us that the coach of the Cameroon team had hunted down the referee and called him all kinds of names and even followed him to the dressing room. Apparently it must have been pretty bad because they also mentioned that, most likely there will be a complaint send in to the FIFA (or whatever it’s called).
It’s not the first time there is a lot of aggression involved with soccer. There are plenty occasions where players start to fight with each other.
Even though someone in their right mind would condemn an action like that, there are fans that ‘just for the fun of it’ will beat up or fight with someone from the opposite team. They probably justify it by saying that the players do it too to each other so why not them.
I certainly don’t agree with any of these things, however I can see where they are coming from, to a certain extend.
Soccer used to be fun for everyone and fathers and sons would go watch a match together on a Sunday afternoon in ‘the good old days’. Today I would be afraid to bring my child to certain soccer games as some are bound to end up in big fights with many people getting caught up in something they don’t want to be involved in.
There is no real solution for it, they can ban as many people from stadiums as they want. If they really want to fight they will just meet up elsewhere.
What happened to Fair Play, inside and outside the stadium…

Well, I guess the thing soccer is mostly about, is money. And then about fighting and destroy things senselessly. And then, back anywhere far … there’s sport and fun. Too bad …
It sounds kinda immature when the coach hunts down the referee … I mean, deserved cards are deserved! Why can’t they just play fair and everything’s okay and when they have to cheat (I cannot see other reasons for getting a yellow card) they have to live with the consequences.
fighting, i find is just soo immature. I’m surprised to hear all this fighting over soccer.
