Lawmaker breaks the Law

I’m currently converting from iframes. Therefor links will not work (properly) and in Internet Explorer the layout doesn’t look as intended yet. I’m sorry for any inconvenience.

One of our politicians, Ms Hirsi Ali might loose her Dutch citizenship. This is due to her lying about her name and age when she first arrived in The Netherlands in 1992 asking for political asylum and again in 1997 when she sought Dutch citizenship.

She has told her story numerous times in interviews before and no one complained than. Apparently her political party (VVD) was aware of the whole ‘situation’ around Ms Hirsi Ali when she first got involved with them, and everyone kept their mouth shut.
Last weekend a TV program traced her steps and she told her story again in an interview with this program. Now a lot of people (even in her own political party) speak of disgrace. Ms. Verdonk, minister of immigration, is now looking into taking away her citizenship and leaving Ms. Hirsi Ali stateless.

Sure we all know that politicians lie break their promises. They do it all the time and nobody seems to think that’s such a big deal. I just think it’s terrible that many people knew about her lying when she first got here and she got granted a recidence permit anyway. If you try that now you get kicked out straight away, you should ask Taida Pasic. Ms Verdonk said in a debate today that she didn’t know about the lies Ms Hirsi Ali told, and that she is going to look into things but most likely Ms Hirsi Ali won’t be able to keep her Dutch citizenship.

Of course I don’t know where this will be going but I have a feeling it will not be good for Ms Hirsi Ali. It’s been over 12 years since she got here (1992) so that’s why she gets to keep her residence permit (if I’m correct) but because she only got her citizenship in 1997 they will be able to take that away. Now there are all kinds of laws about this, ones that need to be obeyed and ones to protect you. And wether you’re a politician or a ‘normal’ refugee, the laws are for everyone.
I think (especially with the elections coming up) that Ms Hirsi Ali will lose her citizenship. Not because of her as a person because of the “The Law is the Law” propaganda prior to elections.

I’m trying to see both sides here, I can understand that one would lie about something if they didn’t feel safe, even though it’s wrong to begin with. I can not understand that someone is allowed into politics when everyone around her knows the truth.
Ms Hirsi Ali has decided to leave The Netherlands in September because of this. She will be going to the United States and work for the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) a conservative think tank.

My vision: It’s not all black and white there is a whole lot of gray in between, but she shouldn’t have lied to begin with and now, most likely, things will be thrown back in her face. I don’t think it’s right to leave someone stateless though, and there are laws here that prohibit that. You can’t blame Ms Verdonk for looking into everything, but those who where aware of Ms Hirsi Ali’s situation should be very ashamed not to have taken any action at the time. Maybe a lot of this would have been prevented if action was taken back then.
